So what is actually happening? The short answer is that perimenopause is changing your brain chemistry in ways that have nothing to do with willpower and everything to do with a hormone called progesterone. Risk profiles vary considerably from person to person, and many women who assume they're not candidates turn out to be appropriate ones.
For women who can't or prefer not to use hormone therapy, there are nonhormonal prescription options. Low-dose paroxetine is the only FDA-approved nonhormonal medication specifically for menopausal hot flashes. Restless legs syndrome is another one worth knowing about: an uncomfortable urge to move your legs at rest, typically in the evening and overnight, often connected to low iron stores.
